Remember! Tax Deadline Day 31st January!

November not even over, December and Christmas still weeks away, not even thinking about New Year celebrations yet!

Before you know it, the tree is a pile of needles and you never want to see a turkey again! We all know too well how quickly those weeks pass though.

I just thought a brief reminder about 31st January tax deadline day might jog a few of you into wondering whether you'd like some of your hard earned money back?

Bettertax do specialise in claiming tax back for construction industry workers, CIS or PAYE, but we are increasingly acting for other professions, carers and healthcare workers for example.

Basically, if you incur work related expenses, and can provide evidence of such expenditure, we can help you claim back that tax. The most obvious expense would be travel expenses but equipment and uniform costs can also be claimed.

Some people are not always aware that they should be or could be submitting a self assessment tax return (remember - self-assessment is NOT self employment!) and we are always on hand to ask. The longer you leave it, you could also be missing out on claiming on previous years, as claims can only be submitted on the last four years.

Give us a quick call now if you want to know more!

Healthcare Workers and Carers in the community get tax back too!

Although Bettertax was set up as the Tradesman's Tax Refunds Specialists, and we certainly have become that judging by our great Freeindex reviews, we also do many self assessment tax returns for carers, healthcare workers and midwives.

Most of our careworker clients work for agencies like Kalcrest. It became apparent that many of these carers are unaware of their tax entitlements.

self assessment tax returns carers in the community

We created healthcareworkertaxrefund.co.uk so that more information about these particular PAYE tax refunds could be easily accessed.

Our healthcare worker section at Bettertax has been designed to help PAYE workers complete their self assessment tax returns and claim back all the tax legitimatly owed.

If we can't secure you a PAYE tax refund, we'll not charge you a penny! You have nothing to lose in finding out if you are entitled to a tax rebate!

Self-assessment tax returns do not mean you have to be self employed!

Our tax advice is always free, so if you are at all unsure of your personal tax situation, a quick call can sort that out.

It's THAT time of year - paper tax return deadline day!

We try to remind everyone each year about the approaching paper tax return deadline day - in case you are still doing yours in this way, for whatever reason... Come on, get with the times and get a few extra months to do it!

If you work in a way that is likely to get you tax back, we would hope you will have already submitted a self assessment tax return as soon after April 6th as you can.

Self employed sole traders will most likely owe tax and usually want to leave the gruesome task as late as possible. Bettertax can help reduce that tax liability by helping you offset all your work expenses accurately, making sure you know exactly what can be claimed for and completing your tax return for you.

So, back to the spooky date that is paper deadline day... 31st October. This man wants your tax money! Don't be late! Penalties will be issued.

Self Assessment Tax Returns - Should I Complete one?

With tax being a seemingly complicated process its often hard to know whether you should be completing a self assessment tax return.

Let's try and simplify things a little.

Self assessment is when you complete a tax return each year setting out your earnings and other incomes, against all your legitimate work expenditures.

If you are self employed or work under the construction industry scheme (CIS) you will always need to complete a self assessment tax return. If you are a PAYE employee, you may also need to complete a tax return especially if you want to claim tax back or for some reason your tax code is not reflecting the correct tax you should be paying.

Although it can be confusing, self assessment does NOT mean self employment.

You need to register for Self Assessment before you can get a tax return. Part of the service Bettertax offer is assisting with the registration process. Once registered, a ten-digit tax reference, called a UTR number (Unique Taxpayer Reference) will be sent to you. make sure you keep this safe.

HMRC will send you a letter each year, usually in April or May, telling you to complete your tax return. If you are one of our clients we will help you complete your tax return - EVERY year, so as soon as you get your letter, P60 (if PAYE) and know your earning details, call us - if we haven't been in touch with you first!

Don't forget that late tax returns will incur fines. The online completion deadline date is 31st January. If you should need to complete a paper return (much rarer these days), the deadline date is 31st October.

If you have completed a self assessment tax return in the past but your work circumstances have changed so that you feel you don't have expenses to claim tax back on, if HMRC send you a tax return notice, a NIL return will need to be completed.

We're always happy to offer FREE tax advice!

So click on this fantasy football link, read the rules, create your team, copy and paste the code - see you there and let the games begin!

Happy 4th Anniversary, Bettertax!

A little early but why not!

Bettertax has been trading for 4 years on 1st July and has gone gone from strength to strength.

The company started with 2 people (and a helper!). There is now 15 of us, all working together to bring you the Bettertax tax refund experience!

Over the time, our branding has evolved to. Here's our first logo and our first dudes.

tradesman's tax refund specialists logo

Working with the old adage, "never work with children or animals", it was a sad day when the pig got the chop! We also dropped the .org as our brand was becoming more recognisable.

The Bettertax dudes got a small make over too... can you spot what it is? This is March 2011.

During that year the logo and dudes got quite a new modern look, pulling the Bettertax corporate ID much more together.

2013 saw another change to the logo and dudes, which can be seen at the top of this page. Although fairly minor it also incorporated other elements to make our brand even more familiar and, we hope, friendly and approachable.

We've seen how our clients love stickers, so that's where the inspiration came from!

Have you joined our social media communities where we post and update regularly?

As we move through our 4th year we have many more exciting things planned to keep us as the number 1 tradesman's tax refund specialist!

Happy Birthday to us!

HMRC Phishing Scams - Beware!

I just got really excited when I saw an email in my inbox from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) announcing "Auotmated Tax Refund Notification". Great!! It's MY turn to get some tax money back!

Here's what the email said:

Unclaimed Tax Refund Notification

You are Receiving this Notification Because you are yet to claim your tax refund which has accrued up to 279.41 GBP,
This is the last and Final notice we will be sending regarding this issue. you are advised to respond Swiftly to this mail
so as to facilitate the process within 72hours of receiving the information Submitted.

On files dated 04/01/2013, The following Banks are processed within 48hrs of receiving your information due to the system link up.

  HM Revenue & Customs

Now, apart from the fact that I know for sure I am not owed any tax back, there are a number of clues here that anyone receiving this type of email should be very wary about.

The first very important point to bear in mind when receiving an email like this is - HMRC will NEVER voluntarily contact you giving you these glad tidings! It's hard enough getting tax refunds out of them the normal way!

Now, check out the really bad grammar - HMRC may be extremely annoying to deal with but by and large, they can write a good letter when they have to.

The email address it's sent from is NOT a proper hmrc.gov.uk one - why would HMRC use anything other than their own?

Just be very aware that these phishing scams come around a few times a year. If you are ever in any doubt, just give us a call or ask via any of our social media sites. Don't get caught out!!

Uniform Tax Rebates

Following on from Paul Lewis' Breakfast TV slot this morning, and a subsequent Facebook comment by Martin Lewis (no, they are not related! The Lewis' that is!), I thought I'd talk a little about tax relief on uniforms and workwear.

As a tradesman's tax refund company, claiming the tax back on workwear and uniforms is just a part of what we do.

HMRC have certain criteria when it comes to tax claims on uniforms. Money Saving Expert sets it out:

To be able to claim tax relief, ALL of the following must apply:

  • You wear a recognisable uniform that shows you've got a certain job, like a branded T-shirt or police uniform. Also, we've heard reports that even plain clothes, without a logo, that you only wear for work may count - it's worth a try.
  • Your employer requires you to wear it while you're working.
  • You have to pay to clean, repair or replace it yourself. However, you can't claim if your employer washes your kit, provides facilities to do so (even if you don't use them) or pays you for doing this maintenance.
  •  You paid income tax in the year you are claiming for.
These uniform claims can be claimed for up to 4 years. If it is just a claim being made for uniform "maintenance", the tax code will probably be adjusted to take what you could get back, into account. However, if your tax code is changed, it is important to make sure that if you change jobs or circumstances, you apply to get the tax code changed accordingly.

As always, do call us if you need any help and advice.

Here we are at the end of another Premier League season.

OK so the winners are not everyone's choice but it's probably a very fitting end to Sir Alex' career!

The winners in our fantasy football league are not as clear cut as we would like as some people joined without reading the eligibilty rules and not being in the UK or (we suspect) having anything to do with the UK construction industry or Homeless FA, they immediately do not qualify.

Please don't be disappointed if that's you! Remember, it's the taking part that matters :)!

So here are the winners:

1st prize - Hazardous Times - Gradleigh Ruderham points = 2,208

2nd prize - peas-in-a-pod - Gavin Cook points = 2,207 (well done, Gavin after last years' disappointment!)

3rd prize - The Irons The Irons points = 2,092 (Sorry, I don't know who you are - please get in touch!)

In order to claim your prizes you'll need to get in touch and prove eligibility. Here's a re-cap of what was up for grabs!

End of season:

1st Place:
Will be awarded a named & numbered football shirt for their preferred team, a £100 Gift Voucher for either M&S, John Lewis, Debenhams, House of Frasier, HMV or GAME and a £50 donation to their nominated charity.

Tradesmen: Claiming Tax Back Time Again!

Roll up, roll up! 6th April heralds the start of the new tax year - shame it can't be described in a more exciting way, like Chinese New Year! The Year of the Tax Back Snake perhaps!

Bettertax make the process of claiming your tax back as simple and easy as possible. Being tradesman's tax specialists, we know our way round tax returns like you know your way round a double arm or level.

CIS and self employed workers can begin the claims process as soon after 6th April as they like. You should have all your receipts from expenses incurred over the year and UTR payslips together - we always advise using a simple 12 envelopes or plastic wallets, for each month of the year to put these items into.

PAYE people need to wait until they receive their P60, which is usually in May. This evidences how much tax has already been paid. You should also have adopted the 12 envelope system to keep proof of all expenses over the year.

We can help you register for self assessment (if you aren't already) and kick start the whole process - all with one phone call.

Don't put off claiming back what is rightfully yours. Speak to you soon!
